Self-administered first aid: the ultimate ‘tough guy’ move

It’s a tried and true action movie trope: if you want to show how tough a character is, just have them give themself first aid.  Whether it’s John Rambo giving himself stitches in FIRST BLOOD, John McClane extracting broken glass from his bare feet in DIE HARD, or the T-800 removing his own damaged eye in a motel bathroom in THE TERMINATOR, a little self-administered first aid is a quick and easy way to let the viewer know they’re dealing with a real bad-ass.

In PREDATOR it’s not one of our protagonists patching himself up, but instead our villain, the Predator.  After being shot in the leg by Mac, Predator whips out his alien first aid kit and removes the bullet from his leg, which must have been extremely painful judging by the Predator’s epic scream.

Here’s some more movies with memorable self-administered first aid:

And one more thing…

Just because I can, I want to take a moment to harp on the AMAZING gratuitous muscle montage of the squad building traps for the Predator.  Aside from Dutch and Dillon’s epic handshake at the beginning of the movie, this scene has to be the most testosterone-drenched sequence of the movie.  We’re talking about huge muscle bound men just stripping off their shirts and pulling down a tree with nothing but brute strength and raw machismo.

Watch this musical tribute and drift away:
