“GET TO THE CHOPPA!!!” – A Quote for the Ages

Arnold Schwarzenegger has had the honor of delivering more than his share of iconic movie lines during his mythical career.  From “I’ll be back” to “Hasta La Vista, Baby!” to “It’s not a tumor!,” Schwarzenegger has always had a knack with lines that capture the zeitgeist of the time.  Which begs the question: is it the words on the page that deserve the credit, or is it Arnold?

If you simply look at a line like “Get to the chopper!” in a script, it’s unremarkable.  The same goes for a line like “I’ll be back” or “Stick around!”  But Arnold Schwarzenegger is able to deliver these lines with a wry smile and a twinkle in his eye (and of course a thick Austrian accent) and change the way we hear these words forever.  Who among us can hear anyone use the word “chopper” and not have the famous PREDATOR quote run through our head?

But even the man himself admits that predicting which lines will catch on is often a mystery, even to him. Schwarzenegger told USA Today in an interview, “The funny thing about it is, whenever I say a line, we don’t have the foggiest idea if that will be repeated.”

But there’s no debating the fact that there’s just something about Schwarzenegger that allows him to take an average one-liner and make it magical, and “Get to the choppa!!!” is no exception.  The line is so iconic that it’s inspiring late night comedy bits 30 years later and catching on with a generation of fans who weren’t even born when PREDATOR was released.  The line has even made its way to the United States Library of Congress’s website.  Business Insider has taken an amazing deep dive into the line.

Sonny Lanham – A Legendary Career

Sonny Landham’s incredible journey from X-rated adult films to acting alongside Hollywood’s A-List is the stuff of movie legend.  Landham’s death at age 76 sparked an outpouring of love for the Cherokee/Seminole actor, who boasted titles such as 48 HOURS and ACTION JACKSON and acted alongside action legends like Sylvester Stallone and Chuck Norris.

Landham was born in 1941 in Canton, Georgia, the backyard of Six Degrees of Schwarzenegger.  Landham began his film career appearing in a string of porno movies, before “going legit” in Walter Hill’s 1979 cult action classic THE WARRIORS.  Given his sordid beginnings, the success of Landham’s career was borderline incredible.  After his acting days were over he, like PREDATOR cast mates Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura, made a foray into politics by running for governor of Kentucky in 2003 and later for the US Senate in 2008.  Sonny Landham died of congestive heart failure on August 17, 2017, in Lexington, Kentucky.
